Corona, Ooh Na Na
Ah Coronavirus. 2020 started off as the year I ticked 2 places to visit on my bucket-list, New York and Los Angeles. Now they are 2 places with the biggest death rates and I think whenever I hear the news updates of all my friends out there. This year I had also planned on getting 2 shows up and running with sharings, I had tickets to see Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act (now in August 2021 instead) and to see the Legend Judi Dench (cancelled and put online). I had plans to be apart of the Glasgow Mela and the Edinburgh Fringe again. I had gigs lined up. But now, in the space of 10 days, all was gone.
March 2020, the month when it all stopped and changed.
Theatres closed for the foreseeable. RCS closed. Auditions cancelled. People stranded in different countries. Work being cancelled. Gigs being cancelled. People losing money. The rich not taking full responsibility. Foodbanks being over run. Social Distancing. New Rules in Place.
STAY HOME, HELP THE NHS.
Words that ring so true as my mum who is a nurse works hard with patients severely ill, seeing them die. This is a time that no one could have seen coming. This is a virus we all have to help each other fight. My mum and the front line workers are the true heroes here. Not the politicians who take £10k extra form working from home. But the people who are still on the same wages fighting hard. Also a shoutout to the people working with their own jobs and teaching their kids from home.
As my friend Phil said though, “whatever has broken down now, will be built up again”
It is a sad and scary time. We don’t know if we will go back to normality. What even will it look like?
But what we can say is, we have eachother in these times.
So my advice: Stay home, stay safe, speak to family and friends, help those in need.
I am so proud to be apart of an industry that even though our theatres maybe closed, we are still banding together and putting work out there. Playgroups, online content, recordings, zoom chats.
This is one phase and we will overcome it. But for now, stay safe x
